Nestled within the embrace of the Sewell Hammonds Estate, Wharfside Park Allotments is much more than a collection of garden plots. It is a vibrant community where the past and present converge, offering a unique space for people to reconnect with the land, nurture nature, and cultivate their own corner of green.
The site’s roots run deep in the region’s history, once part of the expansive holdings of noble estates that shaped the landscape for generations. Over time, this land has transformed, evolving from its aristocratic beginnings into a place where local families, gardeners, and nature enthusiasts come together to share their passion for growing, sustainability, and community spirit.
Wharfside Park is alive with possibilities — whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just starting out, here you’ll find fertile ground to grow fresh produce, build friendships, and immerse yourself in a shared love of the outdoors. Guided by a strong community committee and managed under thoughtful stewardship, the allotments reflect the values of care, responsibility, and connection that define the estate as a whole.
Joining Wharfside means becoming part of this living story, one that honours the legacy of the land while embracing today’s challenges and joys. We invite you to explore, apply for a plot, and discover how this special place can become your place — where growth is both literal and communal, and where every seed sown is part of a larger, thriving heritage.

History
Wharfside Park Allotments occupies land steeped in history, once an integral part of the vast Earl of Wyrley’s estate. For centuries, this area formed a vital part of the rural landscape, managed under noble stewardship that shaped much of the region’s agricultural and natural character.
In the mid-20th century, the land’s purpose shifted dramatically when it was repurposed as a sand quarry, capitalizing on the natural resources beneath its surface. Its location on the banks of the Wyrley and Essington Canal, a historic waterway constructed during the Industrial Revolution, played a key role in this industrial phase, facilitating the transport of materials and goods that fueled the local economy.
Following this period, the site came under the management of Lichfield Rural District Council. During this time, it served various municipal functions aligned with the evolving needs of the community and local industry, reflecting broader changes in land use across the region.
In 2021, Wharfside Park was reunited with the Sewell Hammonds Estate, restoring the land to a stewardship that balances heritage with modern community use. Today, the allotments stand as a symbol of renewal—transforming former industrial grounds back into a flourishing green space where history, nature, and local life come together in harmony.
