Wharfside Park
Nestled on land that was once part of the Earl of Anglesey’s extensive estate, Wharfside Park Allotments is a site where history, community, and sustainability come together. This land, rich in historical significance, has transitioned from its aristocratic roots to becoming a vibrant hub for local gardening enthusiasts.

A Legacy of the Earl of Anglesey

The Earl of Anglesey was a prominent figure in British history, with vast landholdings that spanned across the Black Country and beyond. The estate played a crucial role in shaping the region’s landscape, blending agricultural traditions with early industrial development. The family’s holdings included farmland, woodlands, and lands traversed by waterways like the Wyrley and Essington Canal, which served as a lifeline during the Industrial Revolution.

The canal, running near Wharfside Park, was integral to the transportation of goods and materials during a transformative era in British history. Nearby, the Chasewater area, part of the Earl’s domain, supported industries such as mining while also preserving areas of natural beauty. Today, Chasewater Country Park stands as a testament to this unique blend of industrial heritage and environmental preservation, mirroring the estate’s enduring influence on the region.

Transformation Over Time

The land was acquired by Lichfield Rural District Council in the mid-20th century and repurposed as a sand quarry and water treatment works, reflecting the evolving demands of the industrial and post-industrial era. In 2020, it became part of the Sewell Hammonds Estate, marking a new chapter in its history.

Over the centuries, the Earl of Anglesey’s estate and its surroundings underwent significant transformations, transitioning from agricultural and aristocratic uses to industrial and municipal purposes, and now to community-focused recreation. Wharfside Park Allotments exemplify this evolution, representing the shift from private ownership to a shared resource that fosters local engagement, sustainability, and community enrichment.
